Also included is correspondence, meeting minutes, etc. from McNeary's work on various university committees including the Committee on Humanistic Studies and its efforts to integrate the humanities into the College of Technology's curriculum, the Open House Committee and the Freshman Week Committee among others.

Matthew McNeary was born in 1910 in Philadelphia, the son of Matthew and Mary Stewart McNeary. He received a B.S. in civil engineering in 1932 from Pennsylania State College and an M.S. in civil engineering from the University of Maine in 1941. He began teaching at the University of Maine in 1937 and taught there for 35 years, attaining the rank of head of the Engineering Graphics Department in the College of Engineering. The University of Maine saw approximately 1,000 students and alumni serve in World War I and 3,900 serve in World War II. Both wars had a strong effect on the university and its students; the desire to honor those who had served and to memorialize those who had died led to various activities on campus.
